How to Care for Pearl Jewellery and Keep It Looking Good

Care for pearl jewellery with four habits: put it on last (after perfume, hairspray and lotion), take it off for showering, swimming and sport, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and store it dry and away from other jewellery. Pearls are organic and more delicate than metal or stone.

Quick answer

  • Wearing: last on, first off.
  • Water: off for showering, swimming and sport; dry a splash straight away.
  • Cleaning: a soft, dry cloth; no abrasives or ultrasonic cleaning.
  • Storage: dry, separate, in a soft pouch; not in a damp bathroom.

What pearls are in our jewellery?

Our freshwater pearl pieces, such as the pearl stud earrings (4, 6 or 8 mm) and the fine freshwater pearl necklace, have real freshwater pearls on a stainless steel base with a gold- or silver-tone finish. Each pearl varies slightly in shape and size, as natural pearls do. The pearl necklace has a white pearl pendant. Find them together in the pearl jewellery collection.

How do you wear pearls every day?

  • Put your pearl piece on last, after perfume, hairspray and lotion.
  • Take it off first when you get home.
  • Do not wear it while showering, swimming or doing sport. Soap, chlorine, salt water and sweat can dull the lustre.

How do you clean pearls?

Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. If there is dirt on it, use a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Do not use abrasives, chemical cleaners or ultrasonic cleaning.

How do you store pearl jewellery?

  • Store it dry and away from other jewellery so harder pieces do not scratch it.
  • Keep it in a soft pouch or its own compartment.
  • Close the clasp and lay necklaces flat or hang them so they do not tangle.
  • Not in a damp bathroom or direct sunlight.

What about pearl bracelets and necklaces?

Necklaces and bracelets sit close to your skin and meet lotion and sweat sooner. Wipe them after wearing. The freshwater pearl and bead bracelet (16 cm plus 3 cm) and the double freshwater pearl bracelet (16 cm plus 4.5 cm) have a lobster clasp to close before you put them away.

The steel base of your pearl piece also has a colour finish. Why it can dull is explained in does stainless steel jewellery tarnish? More general tips are on jewellery care.
